The Canary was designed to support you in creating the most powerful and convincing drums you have ever recorded or mixed. This plug-in let’s you expand and recover some fundamental aspects of the drum signal that may have been lost during the recording process or which haven‘t been there in the first place. These include tone, attack, sustain and some very basic filtering, which define the natural sound of the shell. You lost attack and impact through your recording? Your drum signals sound dull or not particularly powerful? The Canary is here to help you, synthetically adding those missing features, allowing you to refine and redefine your drums in the mix.

The attack processor brings out the input signal’s attack phases. The amount of added attack can be adjusted to taste or simply turned off by right-clicking the respective knob. This is our goto feature on dull sounding, close-mic’ed snares or toms and it really helps to make them cut through in your mixes.

SUSTAIN PROCESSOR
The sustain processor adds a synthetic sustain phase triggered by the input signal. The amount of added sustain and its pitch can be tuned to taste or simply turned off by right-clicking the respective knob. Compared to its brother, the BlueAsh SC-5, the BlackAsh SC-5 brings you slightly different compression behaviour, a different harmonic structure paired with a darker sounding audio-path and the option to feed in external sidechain signals.

EXTERNAL SIDECHAIN INPUT
The BlackAsh SC-5 adds an external sidechain input that can be engaged by depressing the “Ext SC” button. The BlackAsh SC-5 is a feedback compressor design, thus feeding an external sidechain input into the existing feed-back loop circuit would result in feed-forward topology, which would result in different compression behaviour. To overcome this problem, the external sidechain input is treated just like the normal audio signal, while the resulting control voltage is fed into a mirror VCA that modulates the audio signal. This way feed-back operation can be retained in both the normal and external sidechain modes.

Magnetite is our homage to the sound of magnetic tape recorders. Simply dial in the desired amount of saturation and warmth using the recording gain knob and Magnetite will add the analog tape sonics that you’re looking for to your mixes.
Huge drums, distorted loops, saturated vocals, you name it – let Magnetite breathe new life into your tracks. We recommend using Magnetite as the first insert of your chain, just as if your signals were recorded to tape. You can, of course, put it into different spots if you’re going for creative effects.

When we first started working with the multi-platinum, award-winning mix engineer, producer and sound enthusiast Koen Heldens on our plugin series, we had no doubt that we were going to produce some extraordinary tools.

The RO-140 was faithfully modelled after its legendary hardware counterparts, while still remaining a Black Rooster Audio original plug-in at its core. Its plate simulation approach allows users to authentically capture an analogue unit’s sound and feel as closely as possible while still including some unexpected twists – just as you’d expect from any kick-ass Black Rooster Audio plug-in.

Achieving the perfect amount and type of reverb for your tracks can make – or break – your mix. Producers now have the ability to mimic any space in their mixes by using this effect, tricking the ear and simulating everything from grandiose width to cosy intimacy. Today’s music production uses reverb processors extensively and with ease, but it hasn’t always been this way.

Engineers have experimented with foil and metal plates to reproduce costly reverb rooms since the 50s, and while the result sounded good, this technique proved to be time-consuming, expensive and unpredictable. Nevertheless, plate reverberation was extensively used across many 50s and 60s hit songs.

A plate reverb’s original purpose was to emulate reverberant rooms, but the hardware versions that followed have become legends themselves.

THE HISTORY OF THE EQ
The equalizer, or EQ, is one of the most used yet most misunderstood audio processes out there. It is a vital tool that any producer should have in their toolkit. Simply put, it is used to adjust the response of one or more frequencies in an audio signal, which can help shape or make any element of your mix less or more prominent.

The EQ was initially used for telecommunication pur- poses and dates back to acoustic telegraphy. It was later used in radio and broadcast and continued to evolve until it became a staple in every studio.

Daniel N. Flickinger designed the first parametric equalizer in 1971. His invention achieved filtering cir- cuits that were previously impossible, and his patent introduced circuit topology that continues to be rele- vant today. These legendary hardware EQs turned into digital EQ plug-ins with countless customization options and styles as time went on.

While some EQs work more accurately than others, this essential tool allows users to surgically remove or boost any frequency they desire, without compromising the timbre of each element, or by changing it completely. While advanced equalization can take years to perfect, it is a total game-changer when performed correctly – with enough practice, it allows for complete control over any sound. In addition to working on in- dividual elements, it can also be used in mastering when used on the master track of a final mix.

The RO-SPR is an authentically modeled vintage spring reverb that adds character and just the right amount of psychedelic flair to your productions. Experience the iconic sound of Hendrix & co. with its 6 spring types, a three-band EQ, as well as spring length and mode control.

A SONIC REVOLUTION
It was the year 1939, when Laurens Hammond applied for the first patent of an innovative, synthetic reverberation unit, that was about to revolutionize the sound of recorded music. With a simple transducer at one end of a metal spring, and a pickup at the other.

Mr. Hammond further implemented his idea of a mechanical, spring-based hall processor, that found its way into the legendary Hammond organs (from 1960), as well as into standalone hardware units like the Accusonics Type 4 SR. Leo Fender made the concept famous, with his introduction of the 1963 Fender Vibroverb.

The Spring Reverb is one of the most used hardware reverbs in studio history, but unlike bulky plate reverbs that could easily cost thousands of dollars, and weighed around 600 pounds each, most spring reverbs are more space- and cost-efficient.

Soundwise, spring reverbs are often described as being ‘bouncy’ or ‘ringy’, due to their mechanical layout, which tends to be low-end heavy. The spectrum used to be corrected by an EQ to maintain a natural room feel – yet many mix engineers used that exact low-end boost to add to their guitar, vocal, or synth tone. This sound design trick, combined with the renowned characteristics of a spring can be heard across many hit records – from The Doors to Queens Of The Stone Age.

The RO-SPR will throw you back in time with its very unique collection of classic spring types, while adding modern-day features to tailor each section precisely to your needs.

ADJUSTABLE GAIN-STAGING
The adjustable gain-staging gives you the ability to control the pre-processing input gain level, as well as the post-processing output gain level. Moreover, we have separated the stereo channels, to fine-tune the amplitude for the natural stereo image of multiple springs. MOTOWN’S SECRET SAUCE
Inspired by the famous Altec 1567A, our latest vintage emulation plug-in features lush vintage tube saturation just like its hardware counterpart. It’s the perfect tool to add saturation, harmonics, and subtle distortion to your vocal, bass, and drum tracks.

The original unit was released in the early 1960s as a rack-mounted tube mixer that had a simple two-knob EQ and a whole lot of gain at a whopping 97 dB! Its sound was filled with grit, density, and character, with its signature green plate setting it apart from the rest.

The TD-201 vintage tape echo plug-in brings the unmistakable sound of the classic analog delay into the 21st century. This intuitive unit offers a wide variety of detailed parameters, making it highly customizable yet simple to operate.

As a part of the 1950s revolution in music production, musicians, producers, and engineers were busy creating the foundation of the modern-day workflow, introducing countless technical innovations – from guitar amps to electric organs, as well as an incredible amount of studio effects. This period also marked the birth of electric reverberation & delay units.

Early-day tape delays such as the Echoplex or Copicat – the first attempts at echo generators – have a history of being technically unreliable and prone to damage when transported, yet their sound was so captivating that further attempts inevitably ensued.

It was in the late 1960s when Japanese engineer Ikutaro Kakehashi and Hammond started experimenting with multi-head tape echos. One of these featured a free-floating 1⁄4-inch tape & spring reverb housed in a rock-solid tape chamber, ready for touring and more stable and reliable than anything on the market at the time.

The Roland Space Echo RE-201 became a best-seller for the brand. It further evolved into a range of delay effects that are still extensively used in music productions and in sound design today. The famous delay sound has stayed consistent ever since the RE-201 was born.

For many tape delay aficionados, there is nothing like the sound of a legendary vintage unit. Still, many struggle with their unpredictability, not to mention that they can be time-consuming to use and difficult to access. HISTORY
The unit which inspired the GA-GT2 quickly became a favorite among guitarists of all genres, upon being introduced in 1989. It’s been used by every guitar icon, from punk rockers to metalheads and country artists.

Due to its incredible versatility, it also became popular among bassists, and producers who use it to add warmth and saturation to drum and vocal tracks.

The sweet-sounding pedal is known for its broad array of options, along with its ability to capture a wide range of tones. It’s one of the most durable pedals on the market, which is why it’s so popular with touring musicians.

The GA-GT2 is a powerful yet lightweight plug-in, which is available in AAX, VST, and AU versions. Its powder-coated GUI was designed as 19-inch rack unit, allowing for the vertical stacking of multiple instances on top of each other, within your DAW. Aliasing artifacts are efficiently attenuated using a low latency linear phase Dolph-Chebyshev polyphase design. The oversampling rate is auto adjusted to your session’s sample rate to save CPU while offering the most transparent sound possible.

Our latest vintage vari-mu compressor plug-in draws inspiration from the legendary Altec 436C tube compressor, renowned for its dynamic range and vintage warmth. Originally introduced in the 1950s, the 436C was quickly embraced by top producers for its versatile parametrization and its highly musical output. This iconic compressor’s innovative circuit and distinctive sound went on to inspire other famous compressors, including the Fairchild and Manley vari-mu units.

This iconic piece of gear has a long list of impressive credits, such as legendary producer Geoff Emerick of Abbey Road Studios. He made use of the Altec 436C to lay the groundwork for many hugely significant recordings, including those of The Beatles, Herb Albert, and Frank Sinatra. The 436C then went on to establish itself in pop music studios across the US and Europe.

Vintage High/Low Pass Filter
Precisely control unwanted frequencies with carefully modeled high-pass (50 Hz – 2 kHz) and low-pass (1.5 kHz – 15 kHz) filters. Clean up your signal before it hits the EQ and compressor stages.

VEQ-5
Vintage Mid-Range Equalizer
Three bands of musical mid-range control — peak boost (200 Hz – 1 kHz), dip cut (200 Hz – 7 kHz), and presence peak (1.5 kHz – 5 kHz). Shape the body and character of any source with surgical precision.

VEQ-1P
Program Equalizer
Boost low frequencies with a resonant shelf (20 – 100 Hz), add air and snap with variable-bandwidth high boost, and smooth out harshness with high attenuation at 5k, 10k, or 20 kHz.

VTC-2
Tube Compressor
The heart of the VWB-1X. Warm harmonic character with selectable ratio (1:2 to 1:20), fast/slow attack and release, dedicated mix knob for parallel compression, and pre/post EQ routing switch.
